Honey Bees

Honey bees are highly organized social insects that support pollination, agriculture, biodiversity, and the production of valuable hive products.

What Are Honey Bees?

Honey bees are social insects that live in organized colonies consisting mainly of a queen, worker bees, and drones. The western honey bee, Apis mellifera, is one of the most familiar species used in beekeeping.

Several Apis species are native to South Asia. Worker bees collect nectar and pollen, produce honey and beeswax, feed developing larvae, and perform many tasks that keep the colony functioning.

Common Colony Problems

Honey bee colonies can be affected by pests and parasites, diseases, pesticide exposure, inadequate nutrition, extreme weather, habitat loss, and poor hive management.

Warning signs may include unusual bee mortality, reduced activity at the hive entrance, weak brood development, abnormal brood patterns, or insufficient food stores.

Practical Honey Bee Care

Good colony care involves providing suitable forage throughout the year, clean water, appropriate hive conditions, and protection from unnecessary pesticide exposure.

Beekeepers should inspect colonies according to local guidance and maintain good hygiene between colonies. Suspected disease or serious colony decline should be assessed with help from an experienced beekeeper or qualified bee-health professional.

HEALTHY COLONY BASICS

Four Essentials for Honey Bee Care

🌼
Reliable Forage

Provide access to diverse flowering plants that can supply nectar and pollen across different seasons.

💧
Clean Water

Maintain a safe water source near the colony and reduce the need for bees to search for water elsewhere.

🏠
Suitable Hive

Keep hive conditions appropriate, clean, protected, and suitable for normal colony development.

🛡️
Regular Monitoring

Watch for unusual mortality, pests, disease symptoms, weak brood, and changes in colony activity.

Practical Honey Bee Care Tip

Support honey bee colonies with diverse forage, clean water, suitable hive conditions, and careful pesticide management. Regular observation helps identify problems early, while suspected disease or major colony decline should be evaluated with appropriate local beekeeping or bee-health expertise.
