Butterfly Life Cycle

Butterflies undergo complete metamorphosis through four distinct stages: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly. Each stage has a different appearance, function, and role in the next generation.

🥚
01

Egg

The female butterfly generally lays eggs on or near suitable host plants, giving emerging caterpillars access to appropriate food.

02

Caterpillar

The caterpillar focuses mainly on feeding and growth. It passes through several growth stages and sheds its skin as it develops.

03

Chrysalis

After reaching maturity, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis where major structural changes take place during metamorphosis.

Adult Butterfly

The adult emerges, develops functional wings, feeds, mates, and reproduces, beginning the next generation.

How the Life Cycle Works

The butterfly life cycle is a process of complete metamorphosis consisting of four main stages: egg, larva or caterpillar, pupa or chrysalis, and adult butterfly.

Each stage has a different appearance and function. The young and adult stages have very different body forms, with the adult eventually producing new eggs and beginning another generation.

Growth & Metamorphosis

During the larval stage, the caterpillar's primary function is feeding and growth. It may consume large amounts of leaves while passing through several growth stages.

After reaching sufficient maturity, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis. Major structural changes occur inside before the adult butterfly eventually emerges.

Threats During Development

The butterfly life cycle can be affected by temperature, rainfall, food availability, predators, parasites, disease, pesticides, and habitat quality.

Caterpillars may be eaten by birds and other predators, while eggs can be damaged by insects, weather, or human activity.

Important: Removing all caterpillars from gardens can unintentionally eliminate future generations of butterflies.

Complete Metamorphosis

Egg → Caterpillar → Chrysalis → Adult

Each stage depends on suitable habitat and resources. Protecting both host plants and nectar sources helps support butterflies throughout their entire life cycle.

Practical Butterfly Care Tip

Do not focus only on attracting adult butterflies. Grow suitable host plants for caterpillars as well as nectar-producing flowers for adults, and avoid unnecessary pesticide use.
