Bird Feeding & Care

Support healthy bird populations by providing suitable food, clean water, shelter, and safe spaces while maintaining hygiene and reducing potential risks.

01

Food, Water & Shelter

Bird feeding and care involve providing birds with suitable food, clean water, shelter, and safe spaces while maintaining hygiene and reducing potential risks.

Feeding can be particularly useful during periods when natural food availability is limited, although birds should ideally continue to have access to natural food sources such as insects, seeds, fruits, nectar, and native plants.

Choosing Suitable Bird Food

Different birds have different dietary requirements. Seed-eating species may use grains and suitable seeds, while fruit-eating and nectar-feeding birds require different resources.

Food should be fresh, clean, and appropriate for the species being attracted. Avoid giving birds spoiled, mouldy, excessively salty, or highly processed human foods.

Remember: Always provide clean water in shallow containers that birds can safely enter and leave.

Hygiene & Common Risks

One of the biggest problems associated with bird feeding is poor hygiene. Accumulated droppings, old food, wet seed, and dirty water can encourage the spread of diseases.

Feeders can also attract rodents or create conflicts between aggressive and smaller bird species. Feeding birds in locations exposed to cats, dogs, traffic, or other hazards can increase their risk.

Practical Bird Care Tip

Clean feeding and drinking stations regularly, remove spoiled food, and keep them away from predators and heavy traffic. Whenever possible, create natural food sources with plants that provide seeds, fruits, nectar, and insects throughout the year.
